I composed all the music to this scene in the Hurt Locker. The arrangement was very much guided by the explosion, and the big build up leading up to it. I was trying to emphasise this point so when the explosion eventually comes, it’s powerful enough just by itself. Using traditional orchestral instrumentation really emphasised the emotional part of the score. With techniques such as expressivo, and playing loudly (forte), the use of strings captures a sense of poignancy as well. The electronic elements, such as the synth ostinato, are included as a re-occurring theme to enhance the uncomfortable, tense nature, symbolising the inevitability of the explosion. This mixture of traditional orchestral scoring along with the electronic elements gives nice variation in the score, complimenting each other to produce a gradually powerful, emotional soundtrack.
